The Mentor has identical flight numbers to the MVP Wave, but I consistently get a better flight and notably more distance with the Wave, so I rate the Mentor with a bit less glide. Nothing really wrong with the disc itself, perhaps, but the domey shape can take some getting used to: for my hands, my thumb comfortably rests right along a rounded portion on some domey discs like this, making them tend to roll/slide away from my thumb just enough to tend toward a hyzer release if I'm not really careful. I do like the active premium plastic. It seems similar to other Champion-type grades: easy to grip but also a smooth release; hopefully it proves to be durable. I think the speed and stability are probably still a bit much for beginners.

This is a great disc for beginners to get a little more distance out of their back hand. Just under stable enough out of the box to get on top of and not hyzer out. I really love the look and feel of the premium plastic (one of the nicest on the market imo) When I first opened the package I instantly loved this disc.

After I threw it I was just as happy. It's consistent and easy to throw. Maybe not quite as fast as an 11 and maybe slightly more stable when new. Like 10, 5, -1, 2 or somewhere in between that and the official numbers at least when throwing back hand. It is a great disc to learn with and develop better technique.

I feel like with a forehand I get a little more flip. This disc always flies nicely though and I often forget how straight I can push it. I'd say more of a control driver than pure distance but overall a nice addition to a bag especially for a beginner.

I started discgolf with a wave from MVP as my distance driver. This disc has taken it's place. The premium plastic is very durable and the disc doesn't need 500+ feet of power to give you a good flight. If you're looking for a distance drive and don't want to spend $20+...this is great for you.

I got one in my black Discmania Mystery Box. I've been a bit skeptical of the active and their quality of discs. I decided to give this one a go and it has not disappointed!

The rim is a bit shallower than most drivers which is great for someone with small hands. And the rim width is similar to a 9 or 10 speed driver. This is a very friendly disc for all levels of play. The one I received in my mystery box is more flat that the standard runs which offer more dome.

    A surprisingly good disc!

I have owned both the baseline and the premium versions of this disc, and let me say that they are completely different discs! The baseline is grippy, feels great in the hand, but is as understable as the numbers suggest if not more so. I liked it for forehands as it is very flat-topped and gave me that hyzer flip I was looking for and a nice reliable fade.

However, in the premium plastic, this disc's turn number out to be 0 rather than -2. It's a very stable to over stable disc. the plastic is very durable. So, all in all, not a bad disc, as long as you understand that the flight numbers are completely off regarding stability.

Anyone else notice a huge change in flight pattern with the new Mentors? 1 year ago the disc I bought had a pronounced simple/divot under the thumb. This month it is very subtle, and the flight is suddenly extremely understable, more like a -3, 1. Arguably more beginner friendly, but not at all what I was expecting when I bought the same disc a year later.

Mentor Active Premium, I picked it up on whim as the flight numbers were similar to a shryke with just a slightly lower speed. I haven't thrown my shryke all that much since getting this. I feel like its a more reliable power forehand straight line disc for me. If i Put it dead flat forehand it works left finishes right. If I throw this rhfh hyzer flip, straight to flat the finish hyzer but also forward. That's the nice thing about this disc that I appreciate the more I throw it is that it finishes in a forward motion verses dumping hard. These have been very consistent for me as well from disc, so i trust that if i need to replace my go to, I won't have to relearn how to utilize this mold.

for someone working their way up in arm speed, this is a great introduction to "big boy" drivers. the -2 turn allows people without huge arms to start seeing satisfying full flights. it will definitely point out flaws in your form though. because of the speed, nose-up releases are punished pretty hard, so I think it's a good disc to help improve distance throwing form.

This review is for the Active Premium plastic in 172 grams. Based on the numbers and feel of this disc I was expecting something similiar to an Innova Archon, which I have a fair amount of experience throwing. This review is after a day of field practice and one round on the course. I threw this disc in all types of wind, nothing substantial in terms of MPH, and these are my initial thoughts. The Mentor did not display anything of the -2 Turn rating unless thrown into a decent headwind. This disc reacted more like a Thunderbird in terms of flight. This disc would hold a straight line for about 300' and then a significant amount of fade would kick in. The profile and feel is almost identical to my Archons so I believe that the active premium plastic may account for this added stability. Perhaps with use it may begin to display the intended flight numbers but for now it's nothing special in my opinion.

Being that this is one of the newer discmania releases, I knew I had to give this a try. Being a new distance driver, I wasn't sure how it would fit into my bag, but I think it definitely has potential. I got this in the active premium plastic at 170 grams and it flies very similar to an innova beast if thrown correctly. Hyzer shots flip up a little and ride and glide for a while before finishes with good fade. When thrown hard and flat it turns over a little before having a reliable fade, making this disc relatively stable. I also enjoy flexing this disc to not only get a little more distance, but to have it finish a little understable as well rather than just being straight from where you threw it. This disc is beating in for me to be a bit more understable so I have been enjoying it even more than before. I suggest you give this disc a try if you enjoy discmania products. Even if you don't, this may not be a bad place to start.

This is a unique disc.  I feel obligated to say, purely for comparison purposes, that I can push an MVP Wave or a Hades out to 400' on a good day in the field, but 360-370' on the course.  Given that this disc had the same flight numbers as a Wave, I was excited to try it.  The first thing I noticed was the plastic.  It is very similar to Innova Champion plastics in appearance, but much more flexible and gummy, similar to G Star.  A very odd feeling plastic, to say the least.

In examining the disc, the parting line seemed quite high, especially for a disc that's marketed as understable.  I compared the parting line to some of my other "11 speed" drivers and noticed it had a higher parting line that my Trace, and was closest in comparison to the H2V2.  The flight was very indicative of this.  The "sharp" edge and upward pointing parting line makes for a very odd feeling in the hand.

My first throw with this disc was into a decent headwind, maybe 8 mph.  I threw it at full power, expecting it to turn over, and it went dead straight about 320', and faded out.  I let my buddy, who can consistently throw 430'-450', take a stab at it.  He released it flat and it rode straight, turned veeerrry slightly, and then faded out at 380' or so.  He agreed that it was more overstable than his fairly new wraith.

Final conlusion, this is not a bad disc.  I'm not a fan of how it feels in my hand, and was disappointed that the flight of the disc was not as the flight numbers had indicated.  Perhaps my noodle arm just can't put enough velocity on this disc to get it to perform correctly, but I feel like if I can turn over a champion Tern, I should be able to get some turn out of this disc.
