The Prodigy D1 is an overstable, ultra-high-speed driver (speed 13 using the Innova system). Like all very high speed drivers, the D1 has a thick (2.3 cm) rim. While the rim is considered thick, it isn’t maximum PDGA width. The width is the same as discs such as the Innova Krait and Westside King. While the D1 is overstable, it isn’t a “meathook”, or one we would classify as “very overstable.” The D1 is a fantastic driver for power throwers, windy shots, forehand throws, and strategic doglegs.

The D1 is a pretty classic feeling overstable distance driver. Compared to the D2 it is much more similar to distance drivers that you would find from other companies.

The D1 in 400 plastic has a really nice stability to it out of the box. It is definitely overstable, but it's not a meat hook and can still travel pretty far. If you use D2s for flippier distance shots, the D1 would be a great compliment for more controllable distance shots. The D1 feels really good for forehand and backhand. Once you beat in a D1, it can get some decent turn but retain the strong stable finish for big distance.

The D1 is one of the best distance drivers for big arms and advanced players. It has a wider rim than a destroyer and is slightly deeper but has a much better flight. I was a destroyer guy before my friend showed me the D1 and now my only distance driver in my bag is the D1, currently bagging 5 of them.

The D1 has a very consistent flight to it. Thrown flat and hard, you might get a little turn out of it, but it is going to be a very consistent straight-to-hyzer finish. Making it great for more big-arm players that are looking for a very consistent overstable distance driver. It has a similar flight to the destroyer, but I find the D1 has more glide to it. It has a really nice forward finishing fade to it and doesn't just drop out of the sky like other overstable drivers. A 400-plastic D1 will be the most neutral of the D1s, while 500 plastic seems to be the most constantly overstable runs. The newer runs, non-USA made ones, are definitely the deepest feeling but also the most consistent run of D1's so far. They feature a wide rim and similar depth to the destroyer and usually have a little dome to them. I highly recommend this disc for people that are looking for a nice consistent glidey overstable distance driver

My last review of this disc was pretty off, so I'm going to try to do my best this time.

First off, the 400 plastic seemed pretty ok, a little flimsier than lucid, but decent nonetheless. I threw my D1 almost every throw right up till I lost it (in my own pasture, may I add, but that's a story for another time), and it'll work for long flex lines, turnovers, forehand drives, and even backhand rollers. If you're not careful, you can turn it way over on a Simon line, but even then it'll try and fight back. If it weren't manufactured in china, I might buy another one. Instead, I lean heavily on my Adder.

The D1 was quite an interesting disc, I have thrown a 400 plastic D1 that was quite beefy and now I bag a 500 D1 that is a very workable stability. It does not fly exactly how the flight numbers would have you think. I was able to flex it 360' which is not bad for me on the 3rd throw of it. It will hold a flat line for 3/4 of its flight before it has a strong fade and bite at the end. I expected the D1 to be extremely overstable and have little to no glide with my armspeed, but was surprised. If you can push close to 400' you should be able to get a nice overstable but useable shot out of the D1. I have heard the new 500 retooled D1's are extremely overstable so if you are looking for something really overstable check those out or reach out to some prodigy throwers, they may know some super overstable runs of D1's. I think I could push this disc out to 400'+ if I get it on a good rip and it'll be one of my furthest throws ever.

Somewhat disappointed in the negative turn, if thrown on 20% anhyzer, it'll take awhile to come back. Also didn't know Prodigy manufactures in china.... won't be buying prodigy again for that reason. Other than that, it's an OK driver

3 x 400 plastic/175g and here are my out the box ratings:

    12 6 -3 2

    12 6 -4 1

    12 6 -1 3

For reference:  I max out at 65 mph on a backhand. I got a 400g D2 that is a meat hook in comparison to these.

All have been very domey. Good feel in the hand once the flashing is gone. Good grip and they beat in relatively quick. Absolute bomber distance if you're wondering why I kept buying such an inconsistent mold. You need to buy them in person to get a similar one or one how you want.

4/5 due to my experience with the inconsistency.

    A tale of 2 discs,

I own 2 D1s both in 400 plastic and they fly so differently that I thought one might be mismarked.

When I first started throwing Prodigy I knew I would need a stable driver to replace my Destroyer and I figured this would be it. I received my first D1 and found it to be super flippy, like D4 flippy. So I threw it on tailwind shots and didn't think much of it. Fast forward to my local courses lost and found sale. I picked up a used one for 5$ (my local shop doesn't carry prodigy, so I thought why not). That D1 is beeeefy. The only difference in them besides a couple grams is the very noticeable DOME. I have a stable D2 which is also very domey. This is the only difference I can see between the two. And it's why I recommend putting hands on it before purchasing.

I really like this disc for when I need a full power shot that will stay flat and straight for 90% of the flight and only hyzer put at the very end. I have a lot of power and this disc handles it beautifully, definitely a staple in the bag.

The D1 is a fantastic distance driver for those looking for fast reliable off the tee shots.

-personally I bag several D1 from very overstable-neutral-slightly understand, definitely a great mold for producing different flight paths out of the same mold.

-the rim is very comfortable both forehand and back hand

    -lots of glide

-lots of low and high speed stability.

This disc was given to me by a friend who couldn't throw it and figured I might like it was I was wanting to try out Prodigy. When I first got it it was pure beef for me until I got my form better and started learning how to throw. I could then get some distance out of this and it would be dead straight and when it decides to go left its going left and will go left fast. It super OS! But very dependable, it also handles a very gusty headwind as well. Case in point I threw it one day into about a 20 mph headwind on a 340 ft hole. It fought the wind great enough that it straightened the entire flight out of the disc and landed about 15 ft right of the basket. It was then I knew this was a good headwind fighter.

I cycle it in and out of my bag with my Gladiator as both can handle a headwind but this seems more so. Also can get some mad distance with this if I give it everything I have and put it on some anny it will hold the line and flex and when it does it will glide for days before deciding to come back left. But just like throwing it hard and flat when it decides to go left its going left and its going left by a good amount. I also feel it has more glide than the 5 indicates I feel it's more of a 6 glide and when you throw it on a flex line it really shows how much glide it has.

With all of this being said I feel due to the extreme OS I feel this disc has and it being a high speed beginners should shy away from this disc unless they are wanting it strictly for the headwind fighter it is or for a utility disc. If you are a high int or adv player you will likely want to try this disc out.

I like the D1 because it is very high speed and overstable, I threw it with a hyzer line and it would up wonderfully. I would recommend this disc to everyone that plays disc golf.

Overall, the D1 is one of my favorites in the Prodigy D-Series. However, I have rated this only 4 stars because the D1's I really like are the Proto-D1's. The D1's in the proto plastic seem a little less stable, so they will glide a bit farther for me than the newer 400G D1's. I will say that I bag 3 D1's currently. A beat-in proto D1 is my go-to long distance headwind driver. I've been told by people that have thrown Prodigy discs longer that this D1 flies more like a D2. I have another proto D1 that is in much better condition. I use this D1 in slight headwinds, but with shots that I need the disc to hold a hyzer line. My 400G D1 only comes out for extreme hyzers or a stout headwind. Overall, this is a great disc.

Power forehand players may like this disc a bit more than I do. I like to finesse forehand, meaning I look for less stable discs to forehand. I've found that by forehanding less stable discs, the disc will do most of the work for you if you time your release properly.

The D1's main problem for me is consistency. When they first came out, I fell in love with my First Run D1 for forehand drives. Before long, I was getting maximum distance out of my forehands, and was getting nice controllable hyzers out of my D1. When I lost it and went to replace it, my new D1 was not even close to the same disc. My new D1 had way too much glide and had a decent amount of turn for being a brand new disc.

I think I was expecting the D1 to be more like an XCal or Enforcer, something that is throwable but very overstable. Instead it seems to be like an inconsistent Boss, you could get a fantastic flying disc if you buy one, but you could also get some disc you had no expectation of receiving.

Try out the D1 if you're looking to replace the Trespass or Boss, or if the D2 wasn't enough disc for you, or if the X1 was too much disc. Overall the D1 is nice, but hard to tell what kind of flyer you will recieve.

A feature of the disc worth talking about is Prodigy’s “Easy Release Technology”. The Easy Release Technology brings a slightly beveled or rounded edge on the bottom of the disc. In our testing, we did notice a very clean release on our throws. It reminded us of the Vibram Lace, which also has a slightly rounded edge on it. If you don’t like the feeling of high speed drivers, this does make things feel a little smaller and a little more comfortable in the hand. Weaker armed players didn’t notice much turn, but stronger arms did see the slight turn at the start of the flight. It wasn’t “flippy” by any means, but certainly not a rock solid rating of 0 for the turn.  rated=13/5/0/4

Love my 172g 400S D1. I bought it for long forehand shots originally, but I found that it didnt have quite enough stability for full power shots and I had problems with it turning over when I didnt want it to. I ended up replacing it with a max weight Ape and problem solved. In the past year i have really worked hard on my back hand drives and I got to where I could get this disc out to around 400' on a full power drive. It is very straight and has that classic prodigy fade on the end. In the wind it holds up great but will turn over some on the back half of the flight.

Definitely a fan of my D1. A great distance driver that glides very well for me. I traded for mine, so it was already beat in a bit when I first got it. I expected it to be more overstable than it was, but again, it was a little beat in already. My disc flies very straight, and fades very hard. I have turned this disc over, but it is a rare occassion. I trust this disc in a headwind more than most of my other high speed drivers, but I still think there is room for Prodigy to make a disc inbetween the D1 and the X1. I would definitely reccommend this disc

Just an update. Been throwing this disc a lot and the 400s plastic is holding up great and remains feeling great in the hand! I've beat it in and it now has a nice very very slight predictable turn when thrown flat but u still can't turn it over. Amazing disc does what it's designed to! Not turn over, glide far, and fade very predictably. Also has great skips on most throws due to the high fade and speed and premium plastic.

I disagree with anyone who chalks this disc up as trash. I regularly go out to fields and practice my drives, and more times than not my prodigy D1 & D2 are among the furthest discs in my bag, and strangely enough I barely ever throw them. This D1, a yellow 400s, gets super gummy in the heat, which is great if you're having problems with grip. I tend to lean towards hyzer bombs or long flat hyzer a because I know the disc is just over stable enough to come back. I'd put it between a force and a nuke. Big arms are needed to make this disc unleash its potential, otherwise it will seem too over stable. Loves a flex shot with a tailwind, and eats up a headwind on a hyzer. I highly recommend this disc, it's high quality and very, very consistent.

For me, this disc is not that overstable. Don't get me wrong, I can't turn it over, but it doesn't hyzer out as bad as I thought it would... If I throw it hard on an anny, it holds it, and if I throw it flat, it stays straight a while. It's a pretty good disc, but I can't really say I particularly liked it... just about the same as other discs I am more comfortable throwing. Maybe one day it will make the bag as a replacement, but it's in storage for now.

I've been putting off this review for a while. Not for lack of time but because I have had this disc for 3 weeks now and the jury is still out for me. I really want to like this disc, but... So to start off, I'm a RHBH thrower with about a year and some of solid discing. I tend to be pretty heavy handed so I really like stable to overstable drivers as anything less than I get to turn and burn pretty easy. That's why I was so excited to try Prodigy's big overstable disc, the D1. Right off the bat this disc feels nice. I think everyone will tell you that this plastic is nice and grippy. Another thing that stuck out to me was how domey this disc is, and the dome is relatively soft. The last thing that was noticeable right out the gate was Prodigy's 'easy release' technology on the rim, which to me is basically them moving the flashing of the mold to the outer side of the rim lip so there is no sharp little edge right where your finger goes (a nice addition but not near as nice as they make it out to be on paper).

My first impression of this disc was not very favorable as I was a little let down at how they describe the flight characteristics of this disc. Inbounds has this showing somewhere between an Ape and a Boss, but when I threw it this bad boy turned a lot more like a Destroyer or a Wraith. With that being said it usually fought back and finish with a healthy fade. I say usually because I used this disc on a windy day excited to have an "overstable" disc to rely on. Not so much the case with me. When thrown into a headwind this disc would pick up and have the nicest slowest turn (to the right as I'm a RHBH thrower) and have a very inconsistent fade. I found myself having to almost hyzer flip this disc to get it to fade back like usual into the wind. As others have this is a nice disc but for me, I will probably keep it around to show off to people and stick with discs that I feel are more consistent.

Pro's: This disc has serious glide!, for real, a little arm can get some serious D out of this disc if thrown right, the plastic is oh so nice

Con's: not as consistent as an OS disc should be (and for me, that is a big con) Overall this is a good disc that I would recommend for someone who has good form and control of the disc but wants a little more effortless distance. When thrown into the wind it flies much like a Destroyer, with the wind at it's back I would say more like an Ape.

I have a 170 D1 in Proto Plastic. I was actually going to trade this disc to one of my teammates because I thought it might be better for them, but this disc really surprised me. It's not super overstable, but it fights the wind really well. Also, it's a great sidearm disc and when you really snap one hard either BH or FH, this disc just goes for days. I don't have a big arm, so I was surprised in one round of a tournament when I threw the D1 sidearm and it had a beautiful S curve. I was standing behind the 400' post and it ended up past basket high! If you want max distance, reach for the D1.
