The MVP Photon is the first 21.5 cm distance driver in the MVP line. This disc is described as a longer Tesla, and will exhibit some max distance generating high-speed turn for power throwers. The Photon is naturally wind resistant for average players and works well for sidearm throws. This is a thin disc with a sleek, flat profile.

When I was less experienced and this disc was brand new it was my go-to driver, the understable element to it really helped me out. I gained some arm strength and it became too understable for the way I throw back hand. But this became my most reliable understable forehand flicking disc I've ever owned. I can Flex it 50 to 75 ft to the right and no it will always fade back to neutral and then some. Just bought a new one in proton plastic which tends to be more stable and can't wait to see what I can do with it. This is a great disc for people stepping up from recreational to intermediate to throw

Awesome disc! The photon is a great feeling disc in hand, especially if you like flatter discs. Plastic variation is HUGE in this mold. For my average amatuer arm speed, the Proton is a total BEEFCAKE and is more like 11/4/0/3+. In Neutron it flies like 11/5/0/2 but Fission it is a slick and controllable bomber 11/5/-1.5/2. I have found the Fisson to be very similar in flight to the popular Wave but with much more reliability at the finish. Everyone hypes the Grace and Wraith but the Fission Photon should be the go too max distance driver for the avergae joe.

The thing about the Photon that stands out for me is the way it fits in my hand. If 12+ speed discs aren't comfortable for you, give the Photon a try, it's an 11 speed that feels slimmer than even most other 11 speed options, and in Fission you can really dig your hand into it. Once I beat a 175g Fission in, it flew a little closer to the intended numbers, and it goes as far as any other distance driver I've thrown. And I throw one in Proton as well, and it's a perfect complement, flies like 11 5 0 3 for me, and feels great for forehands. This is my go to distance driver now, and if you're an experienced player looking for a workhorse distance driver that fits more comfortable in the hand than most other options, the high volume of plastics and weights available make the Photon an awesome mold to choose.

I have seen some variation on the Photon mold. I currently bag two Photons and use them as my primary low-flight bombers. I find them very workable and predictable even in slight wind. I am somewhat new to the sport, but very quickly claimed the photon as my favorite mold I've thrown yet.

So I have two Photon fissions. Both are Hailey King 5x. I struggled to get my 1st one to fly, absolute beef hook beefy to the beef. It was 158 grams and had a swirly two tone. I'd rate the flight ratings as 12/4/0/3. I needed a disc to compliment my fission Wave, which would bomb out and finish straight or a slight turn finish. I heard the early lab seconds of this disc was what I was looking for so I looked and looked then tried a more opaque, non swirly looking one, King 5x, 155 grams, and now I have a max flight with a good fade finish for non windy days.

The Photon is an excellent overstable driver that provides near maximum distance for intermediate players already capable of throwing well over 300 feet. Even at lower weights (150-160 gm), the Fission Photons tend to be slightly more stable than a heavier Innova Wraith in Star or Champion plastic (i.e., it's not the best choice for beginners). The flight pattern eventually straightens out over time and provides more glide before the fade kicks in . . .  but even after years of beating in the outer rim, you will still be able to count on the Photon to fight its way back to finish with a strong fade at the end.

I bag two Photons in different weights and states of abuse. They are by far the longest overstable drivers in my bag at higher elevations (3500-4000 feet) and my workhorse drivers when throwing into a headwind or at lower elevation where my MVP Waves tend to misbehave. I also occasionally throw my MVP Tesla, Axiom Wrath or Axiom Defy at lower elevations, but none of those overstable discs get anywhere close to the number of reps that my Photons enjoy. The Photons fly at least 40-60 feet farther than the Tesla, Wrath or Defy with no additional effort.

This is a great disc. It's always in my bag. It is very over stable even at 145 grams (Fission Plastic), I've yet to get it to turn over and I haven't seen anybody else do so either. I highly recommend this disc for players with decent arm speed and control. If you are looking for a disc that feels good in your hand and has good fade, but not a meat hook, this is it.

This disc is incredible for forehand players. Can't speak for backhand players as I primarily throw forehand. I love the weight of this disc and the flight path. It is incredibly consistent IF you start it on the right angle. It is possible to start it on too much of an anhyzer angle which forces it left so focus on your release and let this baby fly.

I called it out above where you have to be careful with how much anhyzer angle you put on it, but this is also a pro of this disc. Without having a strong backhand, there are many scenarios where I need a disc to fall left which is hard to do with a forehand throw. With enough height and anhyzer angle, I have consistently been able to use this disc for shots that it was probably not meant for.

I would highly recommend this disc if you are looking for a reliable driver that can easily fly 350+ ft consistently.

This is another disc that I am working into my rotation. As my arm speed is increasing I can get more flight out of this disc, but currently that is not consistent for me. When I do get the right release maybe with a slight anhyzer this will glide like a gem. I'm sure the combination of this beating in and my arm speed increasing I can release on flat but overall the reliable fade at the end makes me confident this will always fight out of an anhyzer. Will feel very overstable if you don't get enough arm speed on it.

I bought a fission photon expecting it to fly like a slower destroyer or a wraith with an over mold. Boy oh boy was I wrong. The photon is an absolute meathook. It is so overstable until you start to really beat it up. That being said once I adjusted my expectations and I started to beat it up it is so money. When I got it to beat in a little bit it flies dead straight and even turns a little bit, but I always fades back hard at the end. That gives a great opportunity for long flex shots and straight to fade shots.

The fission plastic feels amazing, but the light weight just feels kind of odd in my hand. I tend to have a major adjustment going from discs in the 170's to a 145 photon, and it makes me doubt my grip. It's also a big reason why I don't like the photon for forehands. I'd love to try a 160-170 weight photon for forehand shots, but I'm worried that it'll just be too overstable.

Overall, the photon is a great disc that was not what I expected. I would not at all reccomend it for beginners because of the stability, but for more experienced players give it a try because once it beats in it gets really nice.

This distance driver is very handy for me. I like to throw it yet as it is a driver which I have a lot of control over. Distance wise, I can throw it close to 300-400 feet. I may rarely get over it. I feel that I don’t have to put to push effort over this disc to get the flight which I want. I say that this distance driver is not for all beginners. This is because distance drivers just require too much effort for players who have not been practicing throwing a disc for long. I do recommend this disc to intermediate players and above as it does give you the results which you may want. Some people may say that this disc is just used for meat hooks, but I say that it is not. This distance fights the wind well. I can trust it to not be taken over by it too much. I must say though, the plastic is a little tacky and does lose grip when wet. It also gets a little flippy when in hot weather, so I say that you may like a harder plastic. I find that this distance driver has helped me over the months to actually learn how to work a disc. Sometimes I feel that playing disc golf means that I have to adjust my game so it can fit the disc. It is partially true, yet I find that when I use this disc it can actually have good effects on my form. It doesn’t require me to lower my body in any way and I know that I can have my regular form without it getting disturbed. I find that this disc is very useful on the course and I can use it in difficult situations and on some tee-shots. Overall, I must say that this disc is a very good disc. It may be the disc for you, so I recommend that you that you try it out. It definitely might fit in my bag and I find that the more practice makes me better when using this disc. Discs like these take time for them to fit well and be understood by you. When I first threw this disc I threw it about 250 feet and it was all hyzer. This disc may be for you so give it a rip and see the results.

In 149g Fission plastic, this is a really fun disc. It covers some good distance with a little turn and just enough fade when new. I'd say 350 foot drives are almost easy.

The light weight seems to reduce the skip that I normally expect from discs of this speed. Also, when shanked into the rough, it doesn't penetrate too far. It looses momentum quickly when it touches anything. More so than other heavier discs.

Definitely didn't fly as advertised, in my opinion. I had a max weight Photon that just seemed like a total meathook. Originally I thought it was my beginner form but after refining my throw and going back to it...STILL a meathook. Maybe MVP and I just don't get along, because it seems others enjoy it. Just not a disc for my game.

This disc is a bit quicker and more overstable than advertised in my experience. I have a domey, 162g and it's pretty beefy, even into a strong headwind. I've had a 173g in photon plastic that was flatter, and it had a bit more turn. This is my overstable distance driver. Because of the speed required to get it to fly correctly, I'd say it's not the best beginner disc. But for intermediate to advanced players it's a really controllable distance driver that you can rely on for a long straight flight with a nice strong fade. I always bag one or two. Strong arms will get the perfect amount of controllable turn.

The Fission Photon was a disc I bought because I was curious about the performance of MVP's fission plastic. I am a fan of the feel of the plastic; it's got some of the gummy-ness of Neutron, but isn't as hard as electron. More about the disc, the photon has found a place in my bag as a stable-overstable distance driver. I max out with this disc when thrown flat at around the 375' range. This thing will not turn. No matter how hard I rip on it, I can't get it to flip up. That being said, it doesn't just crash out of the sky either. If I throw it flat it soars straight for the majority of the flight before a reliable, controlled fade. It is a very useful disc, but if you don't have the arm for it, you won't have much fun throwing it. Once you get your arm speed up, it is a very satisfying disc to watch fly.

First off... love me some MVP discs! Just feel good in my hand.  Just got a fission photon 165, and I love it!!!  I throw mostly RHFH, and the Photon is more overstable than any of the other MVP discs Ive thrown. I have purposely tried to roll this over, in a crazy headwind - no way. In Florida, we get serious gusts, and the photon just slices right thru.  I cant get big distance yet, but I sure get close to it with this baby.Thrown flat the  photon will giddyup and just dump down, its magic in the woods. Love the fission plastic.. it feels like it will float if you drop it! Im having a blast working the angles and just watching how easily this disc flies where I want it. I tried destroyers and firebirds...  may they enjoy their new lives in the bottom of the lakes I flicked them into... photon, this is my overstable workhorse.

Great Driver! I have been using these for about 4 years now. I absolutely love it. Was the first distance driver I could control well, and know exactly what was going to happen when I threw it.

Fission Plastic - When it gets beat in, gets flippy. Can get some massive distance with a nicely seasoned one.

Proton - More overstable - Great for head winds. 168g+

Neutron - Closer to fission, but takes longer to season. Well seasoned they really fly far

Plasma - More overstable - Good in head winds 170g+

I played back in the '90's when an Innova Raven was a high speed driver, got back into the sport 2 years ago. Got this disc in 155g Fission about three months in, when I was still maxing out at 200', and it was an overstable meathook for me. Still, this disc and a DX Wraith were still my longest throwers, so it stayed in the bag and I threw it, poorly.

2 years on and a lot of field work later, This is still the disc I go to when I just want something reliable. Thrown flat and hard, I can get 325' with a generous turn and just enough fade to bring it back to straight where I aimed. When the stars align, it's good for 375' for me. Consistently my farthest thrower. I have smaller hands, and the rim thickness is perfect. Where my Nitro or Destroyer feels a little too chunky in my hand and hard to get consistent grip, this is the sweet spot for me. Where Wraiths no longer come back for me, this disc does.

Yesterday, on a 370' hole in the open, aimed dead at the basket and got this into circle 1 with the disc never going more than 10' in the air. Had 2 guys on the hole next to me compliment me on my drive. First time ever for this noodle arm.

Just a fantastic disc. Period. Might be a little much for a newb, but this is still the disc you want to help work on form and distance.

This is a great disc, specifically so to help learn release angles. It changed the way I approach hyzerflips and flex shots. The Photon can do them all with the right release. I bag a 174g fission and its a dream to send at level height through the trees and watch the distance keep going on by. I'd say I can get this disc out to about 300-325 reliably, with a tail wind about 350. I recommend this disc for forehand throwers specifically who need a flex disc in their bags.

The Photon is an outstanding driver from MVP Disc Sports. It is an 11 speed so not too fast and doesn't have the largest of rims. This is great for my small hands. I've thrown the Photon in a number of different plastics but my favorite by far is the FR Fission Photon. If you come across a FR in an auction or just by chance... make sure you pick it up! These things are super controllable. With a slight amount of hyzer, they will flip up flat, and turn over some but still finish with some fade. Throw it with a steep hyzer release and it will flip up to flat and glide forever before finishing with fade. It can also be turned over to get a nice amount of glide with a straight finish. While the odds of finding one of these first runs is slim to none, I have heard that the newest Elaine King runs of Fission Photons are the most similar to the FR than any other run. In different plastics such as Neutron and Proton, the Photon is an outstanding overstable driver with just the right amount of fade. Not too much fade where it is unusable, just the perfect amount. Don't get me wrong when saying just the right amount of fade, the Proton and Neutron Photon will still fight wind for you. Overall just an outstanding disc that I will ALWAYS have in my bag!

This disc has some really good glide and gets some easy distance in the fission plastic. The weight will dictate a lot of the flight of this disc, lighter fission photon will be great hyzer flips while the higher weights are straighter.

All-n-all it is a great disc to start learning how to throw higher speed discs.

I want to preface this by saying that I bought this in Fission plastic at 155g.

This is the lightest disc I own.  I would say I have average arm strength and this disc is insanely flippy.  It will turn all the way over on a hyzer flip with any wind.  Very easy to throw.  Pretty fast out of your hand.  I also own both a Wave and an Insanity and this disc is more understable than either of them.  If you are going to buy, skip Fission plastic all together and get this in Proton or Neutron at max weight.

I want to start out by saying that i am a huge fan of the MVP Photon (i bag 6 of them).

    1 max weight Plasma plastic ---- 2 ElaineKing Fissions 174g 142g ---- 3 normal stamp fission photons 167g 156g and 162g

I also ave plenty of experience throwing proton and neutron plastic photons so i understand these discs very well. I see a lot of reviews on here that would confuse many buyers. Some say the fission is flippy while some call the photon a beef cake. The thing about the photon is it  truly is a disc you could build a bag around. l will begin by telling you a little about my personal driving ability that way you can decide for yourself how to interpret my review for your game. I am a mid tier advanced player or high tear intermediate. I can drive 350 consistantly and can usually drive 375 comfortably. I can eclipse 400 on a good day but id say 365ft for the honestly of this review. I will begin by giving my personal experience flight numbers for the plasics.

    Fission ElaineKing Stamp --- 174g 11-5-0-3 / 142g 11-5-0.5-2

    Fission Normal Stamp --- 11-5-1.5-2.5 (152g / 167g)

    Neutron --- 174g 11-5-0.5-2.5 / 165g  11-5-.075-2.5

    Proton --- 174g 11-5-0-3

Fission Review - The fission photon is nothing short of straight money. The Elain King ones are true wind fighters. The 174g one really fights the wind. These are truly a very beeft version of the photon and recomended for the very stable flex throw / wind fighter / side arm. The 142g one however is a little strange. When i throw it flat it doesn't turn very much if any at all. However, If i put some Anhyzer on the disc it will hold it for a long time and come back for a very nice long distance throw.

Normal Stamp Fission --- These photons are the true bombers of all the photons for me. If released flat they will get a very nice turn and come back at the end for what is my max distance. I am very comfortable throwing hyzer flips and these discs love being hyzer flipped. In a tail wind they can go a mile when released with a little anhyzer. One thing I feel is very important to know and understand is these do break in. The fission plastic while very durable is amazing for breaking them in and getting different flights out of them. As I said before i bag 5 fission photons for a reason. The Fission plastic also comes in differnt variations of dome. It is a pretty flexible plastic as well so that is important to consider when buying one.

Neutron / Plasma / Proton --- Honestly in my experience these 3 plastics fly pretty much the same. They are all a good amount more stable than all fission runs besides the Elaine King runs. The Neutron may be a little less stable than plasma and proton but not by much. For a mid 300ft thrower they may be to much disc at max weight for anything more than a wind fighter or utility. If you buy them in 160's/150's I believe you will be amazed at how stable they still are. The beautiful thing about GYRO is the weight on the rim which allows you to throw lighter weights than most brands.

Photons are comparable to a destroy having a disc baby with a wraith. While MVP calls it a speed 11 it flies the distance of a speed 12. I hope this review will help some future buyers along the way. Iv enjoyed typing this review and will be looking to do more in the future in more detail like this one. To often reviews are so short they leave a lot of questions to be asked. This is my first of what i hope are many in detail reviews down the road. Thank you for reading!!

I got a very light fission disc (138g I think).  I really wanted to like this disc, but it was just too uncontrollable.  If I got the angle just right it would bomb like crazy, especially with a bit of a tail wind.  But I had it turn and burn on me several times, and if I overcompensated with a hyzer release I could end up with a big sweeping fade.

Honestly, this is probably a function of the low weight.  I've thrown plenty of other MVP discs and find everything above 155 grams or so pretty reliable.  This was just too light, I guess.  If you're looking for a Photon to use as a driver, I'd recommend a different plastic than Fission, or at least on the higher end of the weights for Fission discs.

All of that said, I do keep this disc in my bag, but as a utility disc.  I really like the way this disc flies for an overhead (tomohawk).  I can get it really high to get it over obstacles, and it planes out quickly and drops pretty much straight down.  It's a very useful flight path when attacking guarded greens.

I would have to say that this disc in fission plastic isn't anything described in the description of the disc. If throwing into a headwind it gets scooped up and pushed if you don't throw on a hyzer. I have one in 160g class and it turns majorly especially in a crosswind. I will say if you throw the disc with slight hyzer it does amazing and for a good long anhyzer s shot. It will hold an anhyzer line and come back with a decent gradual fade. In no wind conditions this disc is still prone to turning over, overall it's a good disc I just don't recommend the fission plastic. I use the fission plastic for water shots because if I lose it I'm really not missing out on anything so I'm okay with them falling into the water lol.

This disc is a great flyer. It can hold a hyzer line, but if I release it at any anhyzer angle it holds it for a long time before it fades or tries to fade back to the left (RHBH). I have found uses for its flight pattern.

The fission plastic for MVP would be like the Blizzard Champion for Innova. It is very light and easy to over-power throwing sidearm. I throw the Fission Photon back hand and it flies very good then tails left right at the end which I like. I would recommend this disc for more experienced players that can throw back-hand.

I picked this disc up from infinite as my first sight unseen disc ever. Read: I've never purchased a disc that I haven't touched first. That said, had I been able to handle this, I probably wouldn't have purchased it. The gyro rim is ... Interesting. The flight plate is ... Flimsy. It doesn't feel confidence inspiring in my hand, but that's just me. I intended to use this as a power rhbh distance adder. I watched videos of several different reviewers all say that they were bombing this thing. I guess that makes me special, because I can't get it a lick further than my Innova champ tern, which is allegedly a similar disc (high speed low fade), in any wind condition. I am very "eh" about this disc. Full disclosure I've only tossed it about two dozen times. I am hoping that after a bunch of rounds that some mystical disc mojo will change this thing's characteristic and I'll love it like everyone else does. Pros are its consistent and predictable flight path; reasonable fade. Cons are the feel of it, and for something that is supposed to be new school tech, it's not very easy to throw. I wouldn't recommend it for beginners.

10/25/2015 Updated review: I have had the opportunity to throw this disc a lot more, and in some different conditions and under different circumstances, and I will be honest, it is growing on me. I would rate the speed at just faster than 11, it does take some arm to get it to fly. It has actually become a consistent hyzer flyer for me, and it gets to where it is going very quickly. I would say that despite the light weight (mine is 158g) it stands up to a headwind very nicely, and will actually retain its flight characteristics very well. As others have mentioned, crosswinds do some strange things to it, so I would avoid throwing it in such conditions. After some careful thought and manipulation (and form improvement), this has now become my longest driver. I would recommend it more for intermediate players who are looking for a nice stable driver that is not wildly overstable. My initial review stated that this disc was not confidence inspiring, but now, given the right conditions, this is a disc I have come to throw some of my most confident and committed shots with.

I throw this in 144g fission plastic and it is currently the only driver I carry over a speed 9. This thing is a laser out of my the hand. When I first started throwing this disc it had a strong fade with little turn, but as my form  improved and encountering a few trees,  it now gets a nice turn before gradually fading back. This is my main driver, it even performs decently  into a mild headwind. It does however not like cross winds, as it tends to get pushed around. I just added a second one at 155g to my bag. Love this disc!

5/2/16- I lost the 155 and only hace the 144. With it's light weight and my improvement in form and arm speed this disc became a little unpredictable. I had to take it down to a 4.

My Fission plastic Photon continues to baffle me, I do not have the greatest arm for disc golf, yet i can get this disc go where I need or want it to go. Even after the disc was chunked pretty hard from hitting a tree it doesn't fly very different from when I first picked up this disc.

It flies very similarly to my fission volt, which i absolutely love. Definitely a keeper in my bag,

I picked this disc up from infinitediscs. Its awesome really. I got it in max weight fusion 165gs I throw it hard and flat and it just carries forever. It looks like it's just hovering resisting the fade. I easily out throw my King and Destroyer with it with much more accuracy. It's unreal how long and straight this disc is for me. My new go to driver for sure.

I don't have a monster arm so my review is based on a decent intermediate player level.

I pre-ordered this bad boy from here and it arrived looking ever so tempting to thro wso that exactly what I did even though it was sprinkling out. Like most MVP discs I find they are easy to throw even if your form isn't perfect. This driver went on it's shown path for me as long as I hit the right arm speed and it flies ever so beautifully. Defintiely more distance than my over MVP/Axiom discs. I still prefer the Wrath to this because I cna shape the Wrath more while the Proton is more of a rip it stable disc for me.

If you're looking for more distance in the MVP line this is it. I hope they continue to make more like this but in an understable mold do we can push that distance ever farther.

The photon is a good high speed disc that is fairly beginner friendly. A slight turn off the wrist though and it is fading right off the bat

When I first felt the Photon, I noticed how thick the rim really is. It is substantally thicker than the existing MVP drivers. This disc is pretty sharp at both the inner and outer edges of the rim, and it's definitely not the most comfortable disc I've ever felt. When playing with the Photon I never noticed that it isn't a comfortable disc, and was able to throw it just fine.

With as fast as the Photon is, and as stable as Gyro discs tend to be, I decided to go with a light weight 143g MVP Fission Photon. For my first few throws, this disc still flew very stable/overstable despite the ultra low weight. Then I hit a tree really hard and instantly the Photon became a little understable.

Now with a high degree of understable turn, I'm able to get some pretty good distance out of it with a big S-curve flight. I don't know that I can throw this disc farther than I can my Latitude 64 Bolt, but I'd say it's the fartherst flying MVP disc I have. While it can go the distance, I'm not sure how long it will stay in my bag because I prefer the consistency I can get out of the Insanity and Inertia over potentially more distance.

If you're looking for an MVP driver that will go a little farther than what you can do right now, then you'll want the Photon, but maybe not quite as light as 143g.
